Breakers At Isabela On The Costa Norte.

In late September,TotalAdventure decided to explore a part of the “Miami Neighborhood ” which is basically the entire Caribbean Basin. Just two hours away from Miami is the US Territorial Island of Puerto Rico. At 107 mies long and 40 miles wide, it’s perfect for a long weekend getaway. As a US Territory , it operates fairly independent of Washington.

Just off the plane , I went right to the beach at Playa Piñones. The first and last nights were spent in San Juan..Here is the Villa Herencia, charming and from the colonial era.

Surf’s Up !

Breakers near El Morro. However there is no beach there, only sharp jagged rock.

Old San Juan Is Totally Walled In
El Yunque National Forest

Just 30 miles from San Juan is El Yunque, a mountainous rainforest going up to about 4000 feet elevation. While not that high, temperatures there are much cooler than 90 degree San Juan, often remaining in the 70s during the day.

Fajardo South Of Roosevelt Roads

TotalAdventure circumnavigated half the Island in one day, arriving in Ponce by nightfall. The Eastern coast has great panoramas ,but very few hotels..

Ponce Fire Station,1893

The Colonial city of Ponce is well preserved, despite recent bombardment by Hurricanes and Earthquakes.

Ponce Cathedral

In the deadly earthquakes of 2020, an urn weighing several tons fell from the right tower. Luckily no one was under it.

Another Threat Due To Quakes Near & Distant

A great bodysurfer,TotalAdventure stopped in at Playa Rincon ,known all over the USA as a top surf spot. The waves were small right breaks onto a rocky shoreline. Waves get up to 20 feet with winter cold fronts. The cold fronts do not bring cold weather however, it stays in the 80s in January.

Playa Isabela Sunrise

Saturday night was in Isabela, on the Northwest Coast. A rustic surfer hotel,The Oceanfront was very basic, no internet, for $ 100 per night. However ,it had incredible views as seen above. I spent the entire morning bodysurfing and seeing waves crash on the cliffs as well as following sea turtles. Watch the above video carefully.

Flores,San Juan
La Perla From Distance

The final night was back in San Juan. I took a motor view of the seaside Barrio of La Perla, where cameras are strictly forbidden. The final activity was snorkeling just off El Morro, before dashing to SJU for the flight back to MIA.

This is Morill Hall, located in the heart of Lincoln, Nebraska. Here you can find a large collection of the Mammoth remains that have been found all across Nebraska, as well as a variety of sea critters as Nebraska used to be under water in the Late Cretaceous period.

Various Fossils

All of these fossils were found in Nebraska over the last century found by various different people digging about in their yards and paleontologists.

Ancient Turtle of the late Cretaceous Period, about 85 Million years old.

Weapons Throughout the Ages

If fossils aren’t really your thing, they also feature a collection of different weapons from throughout the ages. You can find ancient clubs from Kiribati the sovereign nation in Micronesia, or old rifles used back during the Civil War era here in the United States.

Today we did a drive-by day trip to New York, New York, capturing as many attractions as can be seen in under 24 hours.

At Total Adventure, we strive to travel the scenic route, so to get into the city, we decided to take the ferry. It is an inexpensive, safe, and more beautiful alternative to the highway.

The first (and free) attraction everyone should see in NYC is Central Park. This huge park nestled between the skyscrapers has almost everything imaginable to do from petting zoo to ice skating, or a horse-drawn carriage ride. Many people just enjoy the peacefulness of nature in a huge city.

For lunch, we went to the Burger Join. This is a delicious (and clearly popular) burger and beer spot with a dive bar feel. The decor is based on classic movies and music, and is autographed by years of guests. Though it might be hard to find, don’t miss this burger joint in Parker New York Hotel behind the big black curtain.

After lunch, we headed to the Natural History Museum to see everything from dinosaurs, to ancient cultures, to space exploration of today. This is a huge, very informative free attraction for adventurers of all ages.

Finally, we finished the day off with some nightcaps at the Rum House. This vintage style bar has a huge selection of mixed drinks and liquors with a dark, piano bar atmosphere.

Just a few hours from the Peace Pagoda, nestled in the Catskill mountains, is Kaaterskills falls trail head. This is a free two mile trail in New York that offers beautiful waterfall views.

The hike to Kaaterskills falls is very short, but don’t be fooled, it is steep, rocky, can be treacherous. On the day we visited, the falls were roaring from the rain.

On the mountain, there is a nearly floating observation deck great for taking in the sights and beautiful sunsets.

If you’re more brave and not afraid of getting wet, you can also go right up to the waterfall and swim in the lagoon below.

Finally, don’t forget to drive around the forest to check out the many other falls and rocky cliffs.

Day, night, rain, or shine Bourbon Street is bustling with tourists and locals alike enjoying restaurants, shops, loud street music, and of course the bars!

Right in the heart of the French Quarter, Armstrong Park is a gathering place for picnics, sports, and just relaxing.

Within the park, be sure to check out Congo Square to reflect on the rich influence of African culture on New Orleans.

And don’t leave without visiting Armstrong himself

A visit to New Orleans is never complete without one or two of their famous hand grenades: A nearly hazardous concoction of liquor, and NOLA’s strongest drink.

To close up the evening, we suggest dining like a local. Mother’s is a cafeteria style eatery serving authentic cajun-creole food.

Mother’s combination platter comes with Jambalaya, red beans and rice, potato salad, crawfish, and greens. A true slice of the south that will leave your mouth watering for days.

Don’t forget, NASA is always looking for new recruits… if you can make the cut.

The Rocket Garden

The feeling you get from being in the presence of these magnificent towers that helped bring our species into the space is truly unparalleled. You wouldn’t believe how big some of the thrusters are on these guys.

The Space Shuttle

What was not too long ago the pinnacle and symbol of space travel now rests here as a monument to all its achievements

The thrusters alone tower above all else in the area.

Space Fairing Nations

Here we have all the nations that have contributed to the further evolution of our presence in Outer Space.

Replica of the Control Room

Here we have a replica of the control room as it was the 20th of July, 1969, the day we first put men on the Moon.

Astronaut Memorial

This solemn area is much different than any other zone in the facility. Gone here are the laughing of families and friends, and the overpriced ice cream. Here we remember the men and women who have given their lives in the pursuit of something greater than themselves.

On Sunday,June 20th, I flew from Miami to Los Angeles for an ArcticTropic business trip to meet with programmers and financial types. Above – takeoff over Miami and the Atlantic Ocean.

After crossing the oil-soaked Gulf of Mexico we coasted over the Texas Coast. Then landed in Houston to change planes.

Not long after…… the Deserts of New Mexico.

The volatile Mexico – Arizona border- now a War Zone in some areas.

Coming down over Southern California – still snow on the mountain tops.

The 405 – Light traffic on a Sunday – jam packed during the week.

Manhattan Beach.

The Pacific Ocean. The second ocean for me that day – I swam in the Atlantic at sunrise.
