Panama is the crossroads of the world – only 52 miles from Atlantic to Pacific. Only 2 and a half hours from Miami ! From the air one can see both oceans at once. The Pan American Highway – running from Alaska to Tierra delFuego is interrupted for 100 miles into Colombia in the almost impenetrable Darien Gap.

Ancash is the Shangri-La of South America – high in the Andes, far form the tourist tracks. Though it is well within the tripic , the incredible height has the region buried in snow almost year around.

The Philippines have a lot to offer beyond the beach resorts developed for Hong Kong tourists. Just 2 hours out of Hong Kong one can be in the most remote volcanic mountain jungles, with primitive tribesmen and unihabited islands with beaches accessible only by sailboat.

On week from tomorrow night I will board a LAN flight down to Santiago, Chile. The next morning I will connect to fly across the Andes to Mendoza, arriving late Monday morning. Though Spring is well underway, the Andes will still be under a deep snowpack, so there should be some excellent photo opportunities. I will be traveling along the “White Wall” from Mendoza all the way up to the high desert city of Salta near the Bolivian border. Then back down toBuenos Aires for a couple of days before returning to Miami.
