On June 11, TotalAdventure landed in Cusco, Peru’s Andean capital perched at a lofty 3400 Meters above sea level ,surrounded by mountains much higher. Our group was invited by Mountain Lodges of Peru . We had a four day adventure in the Andes, with luxurious accommodations and gourmet food in the evenings.

Our arrival in Cusco coincided with the Fiesta San Juan – a time of religious celebration – culminating on St.John’s Birthday on June 19. It’s also the time of the Winter Solstice bringing clear cold skies to the Andes. SEE THE VIDEO ABOVE TO WATCH THE PARADES.

Quechua is the main language of the Cusco region, while Spanish is the language of commerce.

A Saint is carried by about 25 very strong men. It weighs tons.

Black Corn ! Corn and potatoes originated in the Andes. There are hundreds of varieties and colors.

Only 12 degrees south of the Equator ,the glaciers retain snow year round.

Lamay Inca City. Unlike Machu Pichu , with appointments and crowd control., we had these lesser known, but equally fascinating archeological sites to ourselves.

Ollantaytambo. 2800 meters, built in 1400s.

TotalAdventure is very acclimated to high elevations. Climbing at a moderate pace, the hiking was challenging ,yet enjoyable.

The Peruvian Sol is currently 3,38 to the US Dollar. In general prices are moderatly lower than in the USA or Western Europe – unless you are having the US $ 450 tasting menu at Central in Lima. Electronic payment is common, but always carry cash for smaller places and town markets.
